September Wrap Up and October TBR

This month was actually a pretty good reading month even though I only read 3 books and one graphic novel. It would have been 4 books if things had gone as planned.

First book I completed was Heroes of Olympus: Son of Neptune.

I listened to this on audiobook while also physically reading it at the same time. I like doing that with this series so far, but I’ve recently discovered that the narrator gets changed to someone else for the last 2 books. I absolutely loved this book. I really enjoyed being back in the world of Percy Jackson and learning about the Roman Gods. Since this is the second book, I can’t say too much. I gave it 5/5 stars.

Next I read Legion by Julie Kagawa, the 4th book in the Talon Saga.

This one was so much better than Soldier. I felt like it wasn’t bogged down by the romance and I appreciated all the action. I don’t like Dante though and didn’t like how the books final battle was shown through short chapters between Dante and Garret. I would have loved to have seen a more concisely written action sequence from one perspective. Although, I do understand why it was written that way. I gave it 5/5 stars.

Next I read The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O’Neill. I loved the art style but I didn’t really care for the story. I’ve always had a hard time connecting with graphic novels and this was no exception. I just didn’t really understand what was going on. I gave it 3/5 stars.

Lastly, I finally completed Spellslinger by Sebastien De Castell.

This was the book that I DNFed all the way back in February with the promise of picking it up again. I wasn’t in that great of a place the first time I attempted to read it. I’d gotten some very bad news at the time and just couldn’t concentrate on it. I made it to the exact same chapter that I got to the first time I tried to read it when things got bad again and I gave up on it for about a week. Luckily things got better and I managed to push through and finish it. This book was really good. I liked the magic system a lot. I also really enjoyed the plot which involved quite a bit of betrayal. I gave it 5/5 stars.

I should also mention some trigger warnings for animal cruelty/abuse and child abuse in Spellslinger. They are both very minor, maybe just over a chapter for each, so if you’re not comfortable with those topics, stay away from this book.

Now it’s time for my October TBR.

I’m Australian, so Halloween isn’t really a thing here, so there won’t be any scary reads on my TBR. Since I’m going to be participating in Believathon in November, which means all children’s books, I have to try and get through two of my Top 10 Books I Want To Read in 2019 books in October in order to complete all of them before December 31st. So, I’m going to start This Savage Song by VE Schwab today and also try to read An Unkindness of Magicians by Kat Howard (hopefully it’s still at the closest library). If I finish both, then there’s always Inferno by Julie Kagawa which will wrap up the Talon Saga.

Well, that’s it from me. Let me know if you’ve read any of these books and what you think of them.

Thank you for reading. Byes 👋

    1. Dante’s perspective just seems unnecessary. The book would be just as good without it. And the twist at the end of Soldier in relation to their parentage would have been much better if we had figured that out alongside Ember instead of Dante.
